The Desuperheater is a heat exchanger in principle that extracts heat of refrigerant gases in the AC & R system that is otherwise gets wasted to the atmosphere by way of air cooled/ water cooled condensers. This waste heat is then absorbed by the circulating water in the Desuperheater.

Is the Desuperheater Water Heater suitable for heating potable water?

The water pipes of the Desuperheater are made of either 99.99% pure Copper or Stainless Steel. At various places, the Desuperheater is being used for pre-heating potable water.

How much Hot Water I can get from Desuperheater Water Heater ?

The quantity of Hot Water depends upon temperature of hot water required and the discharge temperature of refrigerant gas available at the compressor outlet.Generally, a Freon compressor having 80- 90℃gas discharge temperature can generate hot water with following options :

* The figures shown above are based on the compressor parameters as 16 hours/ day running and gas discharge temperature about 85- 90℃. The incoming water temperature is considered at 30℃. The hot water quantity may increase or decrease depending upon change in compressor discharge temperature and running hours.

Does it affect the compressor performance?

No. On the contrary, use of Desuperheater enhances the overall system performance.

  • The operating "condenser" duty is reduced when a Heat Reclaim System is "retrofitted". This reduces the condensing pressure, which in turn reduces the BKW of the compression equipment, and/or reducing the condenser fan horsepower.
  • Where a Desuperheater is installed, the refrigerant gas temperature inlet to the condensers is reduced, thus reducing the "fouling" tendency of the condenser & thus reducing water treatment requirement and condenser de scaling frequency.
  • Where a Desuperheater is installed, most of the compressor lubricating oil that is normally in Vapor State will condense & a good oil separator can efficiently remove it. By removing the oil before it gets to the evaporators, the system efficiency is increased with the possibility that the evaporator pressure can be increased.

As a "thumb rule" a 1.8℃ increases in evaporator temperature decreases energy requirements by approximately 6%. A 3℃ increase will decrease the energy requirement by about 11%.

How does it reduce power consumption of the compressors and save electricity?

Due to increased condensing area now available to the refrigerant gas, the discharge pressure after the compressor gets reduced. This would result in about 5% savings of Power consumed by the compressor motors. Additionally, the liquid coming out of condenser gets sub- cooled. Every 2℃ drop in the liquid temperature increases the system COP by 5% i. e. , it reduces the power consumption relatively.

By installation of Desuperheater Water Heater, how much I can save?

A typical 100 TR Freon system has potential to recover 50, 000 to 60, 000 kcal/hr. Depending on the end use analysis the monitory savings can be as high as Rs. 6, 00, 000/- to Rs. 7, 50, 000/- per annum !!! ( Basis: 350 days, 20 hrs/ day, F.O. Fired Boiler )

In addition, it results in 3 to 5% reduction in refrigeration and AC operating cost coupled with prolonged compressor life.

We have a 60/ 80/ 100 room 3 star/ 4 star Centrally Air Conditioned Hotel. How much we will save by installing a Desuperheater Water Heater?

The Desuperheater installed on any of your central air conditioning plant "completely" generates so much quantity of hot water of 55 to 60℃ that you are not required to spend any money for Diesel for the Boiler or Electricity for the Regular electric heaters or "Back up" electric heaters for the Solar System. Thus

For a 40 Room hotel it can save maximum of 40 liters/day of diesel and / or 60 to 100 units of electricity per day.

For a 60 Room hotel it can save maximum of 60 liters/day of diesel or 80 to 120 units of electricity per day.

For a 80 Room hotel it can save maximum of 80 liters/day of diesel or 100 to 150 units of electricity per day.

For a 100 Room hotel it can save maximum of 100 liters/day of diesel or 120 to 180 units of electricity per day.


Even if you have installed a solar system in your Hotel, as a back up for Hot water generation, the Solar System manufacturer provides with a "Back up" electric heaters in the Hot water tank. These heaters get automatically switched ON when water temperature falls below 40 ° C. Normally most of the hot water produced by the solar system gets consumed by 11 PM when your Guests take bath on return to your Hotel. Thus to meet the Hot water requirement of the "Morning peak hours from 6 am to 10 am, the electrical heaters have to be switched ON at 4 AM and kept ON till at least 10AM".
